Read our story…
On a chilly November day in 1991, Carolyn Cooper threw caution to the wind and gave up her job, to open a small but perfectly formed gift shop above a fireplace shop on Liverpool Road in Penwortham. The business was a family affair from the start. Carolyn and her sister Louise began working together and the shop was named Macmillans, after their mother.
Selling fabrics, stencils and paints, alongside vintage furniture, they quickly grew out of their little home and in 1993, moved to larger premises at 11 Priory Lane. New giftware brands such as Terramundi and East of India were introduced, which have now become fond favourites of staff and customers alike.
In 1996 the shop practically doubled in size with the acquisition of number 13 and the glass-roofed ‘courtyard’ was built to link the two premises.
In 1998 a picture framing workshop was built, so that a bespoke and high-quality picture framing service could be offered on the premises. Carolyn’s husband Martin then joined the business in 1999 as the on-site picture framer. By 2005, Carolyn’s daughter Emily had risen through the ranks to become manager, bringing a youthful edge to the buying and diversifying and expanding the collection of jewellery and accessories.
Thanks to the immense loyalty and support of their customers, Macmillans have been able to expand further, adding new gift rooms and launching their website and in 2014 the adjoining No15 Cafe House was opened.
Although the shop has seen many changes over the last 23 years, the business ethic has remained the same, new members of staff have been welcomed into the family and old ones will remain friends for life. But most importantly, Macmillans will continue to offer fabulous gifts, great service and of course complimentary gift wrapping to you, our amazing customers, hopefully for many years to come….thank you.
